At Steel City Swing, we have three levels of class: Level 1, 2 and 3.
LEVEL 1 – Beginners Lindy Hop
Are you looking for a new activity that is fun, helps to keep you fit and where you can meet new people? Our Beginners Lindy Hop 4 week courses at Steel City Swing are for absolute beginners with no or little experience of dancing.
Over the course of 4 Monday evenings you’ll learn the basics of the Lindy Hop dance, and build a small repertoire of core moves.
The course is structured on a small routine of basic moves, introducing new moves each week but repeating moves from previous weeks so they become familiar. We incorporate some basic jazz steps and free styling elements, too.
Ultimately we are aiming to teach social dancing, and building confidence and experience so that you feel comfortable to dance freestyle at a casual social event and have a good time.
We place a big emphasis on having fun with your dancing and not taking it too seriously. This isn’t about winning competitions, but about helping you to become a skilled, confident partner dancer.
After completing the four week course, if you’ve been bitten by the Lindy Hop bug you can move into the Level 2 classes that run every Monday night where you can begin to expand your technique and repertoire. Alternatively, you can participate in as many beginners courses until you feel comfortable moving up.
If you already have dance experience in another dance genre this course will help introduce you to the style of Lindy Hop.

Level 1 – Beginners Charleston
Beginners Introduction to Charleston classes will run three Mondays in a row and are drop-in sessions. They are held periodically throughout the year. Check on the class schedule pages to see when the next classes are.
Similar to the Level 1 Beginners Lindy Hop course, the Introduction to Charleston classes will introduce you to the basic moves and build a foundation for you to move into the Level 2 classes.
LEVEL 2 – Improver
This class is for dancers that have either completed our beginners course, or have past Lindy hop experience and are comfortable with the basics and now wish to further improve their dancing.
There is an expectation that dancers in this level can comfortably do 8-beat basics as well as being able to perform basic Lindy turns and swing outs.

LEVEL 3 – Intermediate

- Are you interested in learning new rhythms and footwork patterns?
- Would you like to improve your free styling and musicality?
- Are you looking to catapult your technique to the next level?
- Do you like to “geek” out over Lindy moves and techniques?
If you’ve answered “yes” to a majority of the above then the Level 3 class is for you!
These half hour classes are focused on intermediate and advanced moves, techniques and concepts. There is an expectation that you can comfortably switch between 6-beat and 8-beat Lindy and Charleston movements, incorporate elements of free styling and jazz steps and be proficient at varying the Lindy turn.
Please note, the teachers reserve the right to ask you not to participate if your dance level is not compatible to the class. If you are uncertain about moving into the Level 3 class, please ask one of the teachers between the classes and they will be happy to talk to you about it and help you decide.
